The Heartbreaking Reality of Life in These Camps

Writer's picture: FearlessFemalesFearlessFemales

Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting-it’s a time of reflection, compassion, and action. It’s a time when hearts open, hands extend, and communities come together to ensure that no one is left behind. For many, breaking their fast is a moment of gratitude, shared with family and loved ones. But for others, it is a daily battle for survival, hoping that there is food, even a small portion, to sustain them through the night.

At Fearless Females Inc., we have officially begun our Ramadan distributions under the Essentials First Program, bringing aid to those who need it most. While we are grateful to have provided basic necessities to some of the most vulnerable individuals, their struggles remain unimaginable.

These are not just statistics. These are real people-mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters-who have endured heartbreak, tragedy, and hardship beyond what most of us can comprehend. Their stories deserve to be heard.

Meet the Recipients: The Faces Behind the Numbers

Ruqiyo: A Future Shattered by a Single Moment

Life was just beginning for Ruqiyo. She was a university student, graduating that day, ready to step into the next chapter of her life. She had dreams, ambitions, and the determination to change her world. But on October 29, 2022, everything changed.

That day, she was at the Ministry of Education in Mogadishu, standing among other students, some of whom were also preparing to graduate. They had gathered with their families, hopeful and excited, when tragedy struck. A double car bombing ripped through the area, killing at least 121 people and injuring hundreds more.

In an instant, her future was stolen. The explosion not only took lives-it shattered minds, leaving survivors in a state of unimaginable psychological torment. Ruqiyo was one of them.

The trauma was so severe that she has since lost her sanity. The vibrant, hopeful young woman she once was has disappeared, replaced by someone who barely recognizes herself. She lives in a constant state of fear, unable to find peace, unable to escape the memories of that horrific day. She needs urgent therapy, mental health treatment, and a space to heal. But in the camp where she now resides with her elderly mother, there are no mental health services, no access to therapy, and no structured support system to help her recover.

She is alone with her pain.

For her, the wounds of that bombing are not just physical-they are emotional, psychological, and spiritual. And without help, they will never heal.

Mama Raliyo: Elderly & Blind

Some people have the comfort of family to grow old with. Others, like Mama Raliyo, spend their final years alone, blind, and struggling to survive.

She has no children to care for her. She navigates an unforgiving world in complete darkness, relying on the kindness of strangers to bring her food and help her with basic needs. Imagine living in a crowded camp where survival is already difficult-now, imagine doing so without sight.

She cannot fetch water. She cannot prepare food. She cannot see the dangers that lurk around her. Her world is one of endless vulnerability, yet she pushes forward each day, hoping that someone will remember her, that someone will extend a hand.

This Ramadan and last, we were that hand. We have provided her with essential food items, but this is just a temporary solution. She needs continuous support-not just for a month, but for the rest of her days.

Brother Mohamed: Trapped in a Body That Society Overlooks

For Brother Mohamed, every single day is a fight—not just for survival, but for dignity. Born with cerebral palsy, he has faced a lifetime of challenges, made even harder by the conditions in which he lives.

His body does not work the way he wishes it did. He cannot move freely like others. He cannot simply stand up and walk across a room. Yet, despite his limitations, he has an unbreakable will to live.

For years, Fearless Females Inc. has been providing him with food assistance. But food alone is not enough. He needs physical therapy. He needs medical care. Without it, his condition will only worsen, his muscles growing weaker, his body betraying him more with each passing day.Physical therapy could change his life, giving him better mobility, easing his pain, and offering him a chance to reclaim some independence. But in his world, such care is an unimaginable luxury. This Ramadan, we don’t just want to give him food-we want to give him a future.

These are just three individuals among thousands who are in dire need of help-but their struggles are not unique. We could write story after story, capture video after video, and still barely scratch the surface of the immense suffering that exists. The camps they live in are severely under-resourced food is scarce, medical care is nonexistent, and hope is fading.

These are not places of opportunity-they are places of survival.

For every person we help, there are dozens more waiting, hoping, praying that someone will remember them too.

What makes this even more devastating is that these areas receive little to no outside assistance. Large aid organizations rarely reach these camps. Government support is almost nonexistent. The people here are forgotten. But we have the power to change that.

How You Can Help: Be the Answer to Their Prayers

To feed one household, it costs around $70.

Thanks to a generous sponsor, we have received $200 to help support these three individuals for as long as possible. But they need more than food-they need medical care, therapy, and sustained assistance beyond Ramadan.

This is where you come in. Every single penny you donate will go towards:

Providing food essentials for families who are barely surviving

Securing medical care for individuals in desperate need

Offering therapy and mental health support for trauma survivors

Funding physical therapy for those with lifelong disabilities

This Ramadan, as you sit down to break your fast with your loved ones, remember those who have nothing.

They are not just strangers. They are our brothers and sisters. And they are counting on us to show up for them.
